Synastry is the study of a relationship between two people. It can be used for any two people; it is not just for lovers. What an astrologer does when working with synastry is look at the relationship from the perspective of both individuals. By drawing up two natal charts (also called nativities or birth charts) and then combining the charts from both perspectives, an astrologer can get a clear picture of the energies two people create when they are together. When working with synastry, an astrologer is working with four charts at one time: Chart 1 is the natal chart of one of the individuals, Chart 2 is the other individuals, and then Chart 3 and 4 are dual wheels. Inside chart 3 is natal chart 1. Around it are the planets of natal chart 2. Inside chart 4 is natal chart 2. Around it are the planets of natal chart 1. By combining the houses, signs, and planets of two individuals and examining the aspects and house/sign placements, an astrologer can determine problematic or smooth areas in a relationship. As energy is neutral, even the worst aspects between two people can be used positively. Negative aspects are the most dynamic and growth orientated. Without these types of aspects in a relationship, things would be quite boring!
